It happened. It finally happened. I played my first game of Nemesis, by Zenit Miniatures! It took over a decade after getting my first minis, but it finally happened.
Lennard, an old gaming buddy from multiple FLGS ago, mentioned liking the Orphans numerous times in the past, and recently asked about the game again to show the models to a friend. I mentioned that I now had enough models for a game, and a date was set to give it a try!
The Game
In preparation of trying the game last year, I created a Reference Sheet to help learning the game. It helped filling up time that I couldn’t hobby after our basement flooded. It came in quite handy, as we barely had to look in the book.
We played the Advent of Arbonte scenario from the old 2-player starter, with some extra troops, for around 260pts on each side. Quite simply, it’s all I have painted for both factions, showed in the past on this blog, plus a couple models for each that I painted in the last few days. The Orphans, ran by Lennard, were successful in destroying the Guardian Totem that my Rocavivas were trying to defend. Since it did happen quite fast, we continued to play for the control of the area, to learn the game better. The Orphans were successful in that too, sadly for my poor Rocavivas short queens. (Thanks for that nickname Lennard!)
First Impressions
I’m pretty sure we mixed up some rules, but now that I have played once, I’ll reread the book with a better comprehension of it, to catch whatever mistakes we made. I also have some tweaking to do on the Reference Sheet, that I will update in the near future.
We encountered very few glitches with the rules, and the more glaring are simply due to the translation from Spanish. The models stat block uses abbreviations, but the company decided to keep the ones from the Spanish version, for consistency I assume. So we had to double check those often, as we don’t make the link in English for most (i.e.: PU for Aim, which comes from Puntería).
Some irritants aren’t mistakes, but just things we need to remember and get used to. Like “Automatic Hits” no really being “automatic”, but needing to roll anything but a one, for example. The Command and Order system is interesting, but we only scratched the surface. Also, I have no idea if we used too much, not enough or the right amount of terrain. All those will get better with experience.
The game is more deadly than both Lennard and I expected from out initial read. It makes sense when you consider the fact that a full standard game is played with double the amount of models we used, but it was a surprise when his Scorpions shot my Pebbles off the table with the first attack of the game.
I can’t say it’s my favourite system ever, especially after a single game. I will need a few more tries under my belt to really digest it. But even if it’s not, I’m really glad I played it and could use the amazing models. It will continue to show up on the table, even if just for that reason.
What Is Next?
Now, it’s back to the painting table to get those two forces bigger before the next game. (Or to start a third one. Difficult choice…)
For people interested in the game, I’m trying to build an online community for it, so come join the Facebook group!
You are a quite an expert on finding and playing games I have never heard of it. It looks like you had fun!
